In Greek mythology, the gorgons were three female monsters by the names of Sthenno (‘mighty’), Euryal (‘wide-wanderer’), and Medusa (‘queen’). Whereas Sthenno and Euryal were horrifically ugly, Medusa was of terrible beauty. She was the only mortal of the three and had a head so fearful that “anyone who looked at it was turned to stone”.
